Biography: Commissioner Linda K. Bloom
Linda K. Bloom is currently serving her fifth consecutive term as an Allen County Commissioner from the 3rd District. She became the first woman elected to the three-member board of Commissioners in 1994. In January 1998, she assumed the presidency, making her the first female president of the Board of Commissioners.
Bloom currently oversees operations of the Allen County Highway Department. She has been directly involved in developing and acquiring state and federal funding for a number of highway and bridge projects in Allen County. Among them are the Maplecrest Road Extension, the largest infrastructure project in the county's history; the new three-mile stretch of US 24 in Allen County which ties into the state's "Fort to Port" project; and the rehabilitation of the Grabill, Lima Road and Tecumseh Street bridges. In addition, she has worked to help develop and expand the trails system in Allen County through highway improvement projects along Amber Road, Aboite Center Road and Gump Road. In 2009, she aided the Allen County Council on Aging in the development of the Countilink rural transportation program. She also works on regional transportation planning as a member of the Urban Transportation Advisory Board
Bloom also serves on the board of the Allen County Courthouse Preservation Trust, helping to oversee the interior renovation of the historic courthouse which was finished in 2002 and the current exterior renovation project. In addition, she is the chair of the County's iMap/Geographic Information System board, the Allen County Drainage Board, serves as liaison to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Board of Directors and is Treasurer of the Multi-Agency Communications Partnership.
Bloom was the recipient of the 1997 "Outstanding First Term Commissioner" award presented by the Indiana Association of County Commissioners. In 2006, Bloom and her partners received the IACC “Outstanding Team Effort by a Board of Commissioners” award for their work in creating one of Indiana’s first certified “shovel ready” development sites.
Bloom has served the citizens of Allen County since 1978, when she joined the staff of the Allen County Assessor's Office. In 1980, Bloom was elected Allen County Treasurer. She held that position until being elected Allen County Auditor in 1986.
In 2001, Bloom was named to the Indiana Commission for Women, which works to promote women in all aspects of life. By involving women in areas of government, education, business and the judicial system, the ICW attempts to remove legal and social barriers and improve the quality of life for women and their families. The organization has been actively involved in women's health issues, economic self-sufficiency, domestic violence, Women's History Month, and conducted several conferences for women.
