With an eye toward reducing fuel consumption and expenditures, the Allen County Board of Commissioners has ordered a study on the viability of implementing a Global Positioning System (GPS) program for county-owned vehicles.

In a letter sent to department heads and elected officials today, the Commissioners noted that the county paid over $2.1 million for fuel and other petroleum products last year compared to $1.7 million in 2007.  "While the County will continue to look for the best way to purchase fuel at the most discounted price, the most effective practice to reduce our fuel expenditures is to use less fuel," the Commissioners wrote.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the use of Global Positioning Systems has the proven ability to:
• Reduce fuel, maintenance, and overtime costs
• Reduce speeding and other moving violations
• Improve vehicle safe driving practices
• Increase employee productivity
• Eliminate unauthorized use of County vehicles

County Purchasing Director Bill Greer has been directed to conduct the study.  Greer is expected to contact department heads and elected officials to solicit their participation in the voluntary test program.  A committee of county employees will also be formed to collect information, evaluate products under review, analyze data collected during the test period, and prepare a final report.

The Board of Commissioners will be funding the test program.
