Snow Drifts Along County Roads Not for Child's Play PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 January 2009 01:00
Allen County highway officials are issuing a plea to residents as they work to clear the roads of snow and ice – make sure your children stay a safe distance away from plows.

"Snow drifts along the edges of roads are sometimes three to four feet deep and they're tempting for children to play in," said Ben Ridenour, supervisor of the highway department's South maintenance garage.  "Our drivers have had a couple of close calls recently and we want to encourage parents to keep their kids away from those drifts while the plows are out."

Motorists are also being encouraged to stay a safe distance from plows and trucks along county highways.  Don't crowd the plow and give them room to work. The plows are wide and can cross the centerline or shoulder. Don't tailgate and try not to pass. If you must pass, take extreme caution and beware of the snow cloud.

County highway crews will remain at work clearing snow until 6:00 p.m. tonight.  They will resume work tomorrow at 4:00 a.m.  Should conditions warrant overnight, on-call drivers will be dispatched by county highway officials or the sheriff's department.
