Residents of Allen County have saved over $110,000 on their prescription drugs by using the FamilyWize discount card, Allen County and United Way officials announced today. Figures released by FamilyWize show that from the program's introduction in Allen County in March of 2007 through December 31, 2008, the amount of money saved by residents using the card totaled $114,529. The amount saved on each individual prescription averaged 32 percent, or $22.08. Allen County ranks fifth among Indiana counties in the total amount of savings and sixth in the number of claims filed (5,186). Initially, the cards were distributed within agencies of United Way of Allen County. During that period, from March 2007 through March 2008, savings totaled $8,028. In April 2008, the Allen County Commissioners partnered with United Way to help publicize the program and extend the distribution of cards. Thanks to those efforts, the amount saved from April through December of last year totaled $106,501. "This collaborative effort between the County and United Way has benefitted many of our citizens who might not be able to afford their prescription drugs," said County Commissioner Bill Brown, who initially recommended county government's involvement in FamilyWize. FamilyWize cards currently can be obtained at more than 50 sites from a variety of participating local partner agencies, municipal and county agencies and departments. "We appreciate those who have been helping with distribution of the FamilyWize cards," said Jerry Peterson, CEO of United Way of Allen County. "Now it is our hope that the private sector will be willing to broaden our outreach by displaying the FamilyWize cards in their businesses and offices." FamilyWize cards are primarily for people with no health insurance or prescription coverage. However, they can also be used when people have to buy medicine not covered by their health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or VA benefits. Most local pharmacies accept the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards. The cards have no usage or age limits, income requirements or registration forms, and can be used immediately. People with Internet access can go to www.allencounty.us and click on Community Links to find the FamilyWize website link. There, they can print a card, look up drug prices, and get a list of participating pharmacies. |
