Deadline to File for "Over 65" Exemptions in Allen County Extended to Jan. 30 PDF Print E-mail

Allen County homeowners have been given more time to file for the "over 65" property tax exemptions for taxes payable in 2009.

Allen County Auditor Lisa Blosser today announced that the new deadline is January 30.  It's the second time the deadline has been extended for seniors.

"Even though the original deadline was extended a week, our office still has had many people waiting in long lines to file for the exemptions," Blosser said.  "We hope the extra time will help thin out the lines and reduce the wait."

In 2008, the General Assembly created a new credit for seniors who will be at least 65 on or before December 31 whose adjusted gross income does not exceed $30,000 for an individual or $40,000 for a married couple filing jointly. The gross assessed value of the property must be less than $160,000.  The new credit limits the property tax bill increase to 2% of the previous year's tax bill.

The current "over 65" deduction is also available. The assessed value limit is $182,430 and combined adjusted gross income cannot exceed $25,000 to be eligible for the deduction. These requirements are different than the requirements for the new senior credit. Proof of Income (IRS Form 1040 for previous calendar year for applicant and all co-owners) is required for both exemptions.
