Plaza Parking Garage Roof to be Closed Periodically During Winter PDF Print E-mail

An operational change at the Plaza Parking Garage next to the City-County Building this winter is expected to provide greater safety and save money.

The Plaza Condo Association, which oversees the facility, today decided that the top floor of the garage will be closed whenever there is a significant accumulation of snow or ice.  NAI Harding Dahm, the firm that maintains the parking garage, will assess conditions on the roof each day and determine when it needs to be closed.

"We had a lot of 'nuisance snow' last winter and it wound up costing around $30,000 to keep the top deck cleared," said Pat Hayes, parking administrator with NAI Harding Dahm.  "By closing that floor and letting nature take its course, we reduce the cost of labor, equipment and materials for clearing snow and ice."

"Snow and ice on the top floor can make driving quite hazardous, so there's also a safety factor involved with closing the roof from time to time," said Commissioner Nelson Peters.  "There should be plenty of capacity on other floors of the garage to accommodate motorists."

On those days when the roof of the parking garage is closed, signs will be placed at the entrances on Calhoun and Clinton Streets notifying motorists that they should proceed to an alternate floor.
