The FamilyWize program in Allen County is expected to ring in the new year with the announcement that residents have saved over $100,000 by using the prescription drug discount cards. Figures supplied by FamilyWize show 4,531 claims have been filed since the program was introduced in Allen County for a total savings of $99,866. The average amount saved on a prescription has been 32 percent. During the month of November, 571 claims were filed in Allen County resulting in savings of $13,140. The average saved on a prescription was 30 percent, or $23.01. FamilyWize cards are primarily for people with no health insurance or prescription coverage. However, they can also be used when people have to buy medicine not covered by their health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or VA benefits. Most local pharmacies accept the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards. The cards have no usage or age limits, income requirements or registration forms, and can be used immediately. The Allen County Commissioners office teamed up with the United Way of Allen County beginning in March of 2008 to help publicize the program and distribute cards in the community. FamilyWize cards can be obtained from a variety of participating local partner agencies, municipal and county agencies and departments. People with Internet access can go to www.allencounty.us and click on Community Links to find the FamilyWize website link. There, they can print a card, look up drug prices, and get a list of participating pharmacies. |
