The FamilyWize prescription drug discount card program in Allen County continues to see growth in the number of claims filed and the amount of money saved by county residents.

The latest statistics from FamilyWize show 405 claims were filed in Allen County during May compared to 375 in April.  FamilyWize helped save county residents a total of $9,364 on the cost of their prescription drugs last month.  The average amount saved was $23.12, or 37 percent of the cost of a prescription.

1,185 claims have been filed since the FamilyWize program began in Allen County in March of 2007, saving residents over $25,400.  The average savings on a prescription is 33 percent.

FamilyWize cards are primarily for people with no health insurance or prescription coverage. However, they can also be used when people have to buy medicine not covered by their health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or VA benefits.

Most local pharmacies accept the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards.  The cards have no usage or age limits, income requirements or registration forms, and can be used immediately.

Earlier this year, the Allen County Commissioners office teamed up with the United Way of Allen County to help publicize the program and distribute cards in the community.

FamilyWize cards can be obtained from a variety of participating local partner agencies, municipal and county agencies and departments.  People with Internet access can go to www.allencounty.us and click on Community Links to find the FamilyWize website link.  There, they can print a card, look up drug prices and get a list of participating pharmacies.
