Just three months into 2009, the use of FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards in Allen County continues to grow.
Figures supplied by FamilyWize show 2,255 claims were filed in the first quarter of this year. That compares to 332 claims filed in the first three months of 2008. 849 claims were filed just last month, a new record for the local program. During the first quarter of '09, residents were able to save a total of $43,664 on their prescription drugs when using the FamilyWize card. The average saved on a prescription during those three months was 27 percent, or $19.36. FamilyWize cards are primarily for people with no health insurance or prescription coverage. However, they can also be used when people have to buy medicine not covered by their health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or VA benefits. Most local pharmacies accept the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards. The cards have no usage or age limits, income requirements or registration forms, and can be used immediately. The Allen County Commissioners office teamed up with the United Way of Allen County in March of 2008 to help publicize the program and distribute cards in the community. FamilyWize cards can be obtained from a variety of participating local partner agencies, municipal and county agencies and departments. People with Internet access can go to www.familywize.com and print a card, look up drug prices, and get a list of participating pharmacies. |
