The City-County Building will host the annual "Focus on Health" fair Thursday, April 16, from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

"Focus on Health" is in its 29th year as a community health fair offering current health information and basic health checks which include blood pressure, vision, height/weight, and colorectal screening kits, as well as a wide variety of exhibitors with health information.

A blood chemistry test with cardiac profile is available for $28, which tests for glucose, liver functions, kidney functions, cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HHDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and cholesterol/HDL ratio. To prepare for this test, participants must fast for 12 hours before coming to Focus on Health.  Fasting means nothing to eat or drink except a few sips of water. Take your medications at your regular time.  Diabetics should NOT fast, but should stay on their regular therapy schedule.

Separate blood tests are available for PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen) and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).  PSA tests are used to determine prostate health. TSH tests alert you to low or high thyroid levels.  Each of these tests is available for $20.00. A hemogram, which tests for hemoglobin and other components, will be available for $7.00.  These tests offer an excellent resource that would be much more costly elsewhere.  Please wear a blouse or shirt with sleeves that can be easily rolled up past the elbow.  No appointments are required for these tests.

"This year 26 exhibitors will be on-hand to share health information and to answer questions," said Debra Hudson, Allen County Insurance Department Manager. "We hope the public will take advantage of this opportunity to gather information that will help them and their families maintain good health."
