The Allen County Highway Department and the New Haven-Adams Township Fire Department worked quickly this morning to contain a hazardous material spill at the County's South Maintenance Garage at 8317 Tillman Road.

The spill involved at least 500 gallons of a liquid petroleum material used as part of the County's dust control program, according to Tony Burrus, the County's Safety and Environmental Affairs Director.  The leak, which was discovered around 6:00 a.m., was caused by a valve that malfunctioned as the material was being pumped from a semi-tanker truck owned by Klink Trucking of Ashley into a County-owned tank.

Burrus said an undetermined amount of the material made its way into a nearby ditch.  It was contained using piles of dirt and sand.  Pumps were being used this morning to remove the material from the ditch.

Burrus said the cleanup work should take most of the day to complete.  The scene will be checked again in a few days to see if any other remediation action needs to be taken.

Other agencies working at the scene include Allen County Homeland Security, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Burrus said no one was harmed as a result of the spill and its effect on the environment is believed to have been minimized by the quick containment and remediation.
