The Allen County Solid Waste Management District is reaching out to schools through its second round of recycling grants. Allen County Schools are encouraged to apply for up to $1,000 in grant funds to implement or enhance an active and sustainable recycling program. Last year, eight schools from around Allen County were awarded grant funds: Snider High School, Leo Junior/Senior High School, Adams Elementary, Holland Elementary, Arlington Elementary, Southwick Elementary, St. John-Emmanuel Lutheran, and St. John Lutheran. Funds were used to purchase items for the development, implementation and promotion of school-wide recycling programs. Items such as classroom recycling containers, bench scales, signs, posters and library books were purchased. The District believes that “the act of recycling” creates awareness and provides students with the opportunity to be environmentally responsible. “Most of the schools recycling programs are run by the student body,” says Kira Blacketor, Education Coordinator for the District. “It is an excellent combination of school pride and environmental stewardship.” The success of this year’s program has prompted the District to offer the grants again this year. Applications are due June 30. Funds will be awarded by mid-July. Complete information and applications are available on the Districts website at www.acwastewatcher.org. Additional questions can be directed to Kira Blacketor, 449-7878. |
