Biography: Commissioner Therese Brown
Therese Brown was elected 2nd District Allen County Commissioner in November 2010.
Brown has more than 30 years of experience in Allen County Government. Prior to becoming Commissioner, Brown served two terms as the Allen County Clerk of the Circuit and Superior Courts and was Allen County Auditor from 1995-2002.
As Auditor, Brown was the Chief Financial Officer for the County, handling the budgetary and fiscal accountability of over 149 funds and an estimated $700 million in tax and revenue collections. Administration of taxation for all taxing units within Allen County was also a core responsibility.
In her eight years as Clerk of Courts, Brown led several initiatives designed not only to improve the efficiency of the office, but to make public records and valuable historic documents more accessible. In addition to the responsibility for administration of all official court records, she was accountable for collection and disbursement of courts costs, fees and Child Support payments in excess of $55 million annually.
While performing the full time duties as Clerk and Auditor, Therese was elected by her peers to serve as President and Vice President of the Northern District Clerk’s Association and as Vice President of the Northeast District of the Auditors Association respectively. In October 2009, Therese was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Clerk of the Year Award for not only her efforts within her office but for the extensive and committed involvement with the statewide Clerk Association.
Brown is a past president of the Association of Indiana Counties, a statewide organization that represents all 92 counties of Indiana. AIC’s mission is to educate legislators about the issues and challenges facing county government as well as to facilitate legislative changes to improve local government. In 2011 Therese was appointed by Senator Pro Tempore David Long to the State of Indiana Commission of Courts and in 2012 to the State of Indiana Commission on Intergovernmental Relations by Indiana House Majority Leader Brian Bosma. Brown also serves as co-chair to the newly organized Northeast Indiana Commissioner/Mayor Caucus. As co-chairman, Brown’s responsibilities are to assist in bringing issues to the forefront to the region’s legislative delegation as they relate to infrastructure and economic development concerns and opportunities for the region.
Therese is a graduate of Bishop Dwenger High School and Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and an Associates degree in Administration.
Therese, and husband Chris, are parents of two adult sons and reside in Perry Township in northern Allen County.
