Tom Harris, presently serving as Allen County Council President, was first elected to Allen County Council’s 2nd District in 2010. He was re-elected in 2014, 2018 and again 2022. While serving on County Council, Tom has been appointed to the Plan Commission, Re-Development Commission, Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce and numerous other community Boards and Commissions. Tom has served as President of Council three times. Prior to his serving on Allen County Council, he had been elected and served as a St Joe Township Advisory Board Member.
Growing up in northwest Allen County, he attended Washington Center Elementary, Shawnee Junior High and Northrop High School. He received his undergraduate degrees from IPFW with an Associates of Supervision, and a BS in Personnel. He has also received an MS in Psychology from the University of Saint Francis and an MBA from Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, where he was awarded an Outstanding Graduate Award.
His career has included over 30 years as a human resource professional, business owner and community leader. His human resources career has included being a personnel specialist, labor relations administrator, senior consultant, manager, and director of all aspects of human resources. He has worked as a Sr. Consultant at Lincoln National Life Insurance, Director of HR at Fort Wayne Community Schools and has served in various small businesses to multi-national organizations, for-profit and not-for-profit businesses and in both service and manufacturing industries. Tom has also served as an Associate Faculty Member at the IPFW Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision where he taught Organizational Behavior and Human Resources.
His community involvement has spanned over 30 years which has included: Student Body President at IPFW and President of the IPFW Alumni Association, Fort Wayne Jaycees, Graduate of Leadership Fort Wayne and President of the Leadership Fort Wayne Alumni Association, Tutor and Board Member of Three Rivers Literacy Alliance, Founder and President of two Toastmaster clubs in the Fort Wayne area, Lay Speaker designation with the United Methodist Church Northern Conference, Staff Parish Committee at Saint Joseph United Methodist, Chairman of the Indiana Young Republicans, Treasurer of his son’s Scout Troop, Board Member of Huntington County United Way Agency and is presently serving on the Allen County – Fort Wayne Historical Society. Tom and his wife are members of Central Ministries Church in Fort Wayne.
Tom’s certifications and achievements have included; Graduate of the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs, IPFW Alumni Distinguished Service Award, Outstanding Young Men Of America, Competent Toastmasters Certification, Rookie Legislator Award with Indiana Jaycees, Intern with Congressman Dan Coats in Washington DC, Senior Speaker at his Northrop High School Graduation, recipient of numerous professional certifications that include SHRM-SCP (Senior Professional of Human Resources), CCP (Certified Compensation Professional), CBP(Certified Benefits Professional), GRP (Global Remuneration Professional), CLRP (Certified Labor Relations Professional), Indiana Real Estate License.
Tom founded Life Planners, Inc. (LPI) and Harris Human Resources Group, Inc. in which he continues his human resources consulting services as well as coaching individuals on achieving their personal lifetime goals through LPI. In 2012 he wrote and published; Live Life Abundantly which is available through Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com. He has also owned an ActionCOACH-Business Coaching franchise in Indiana since 2015 and has helped business owners to manage and grow their business more successfully. His philosophies and beliefs include living life to its fullest through spiritual growth and faith. While dedicated toward the premise that the “unexamined life is not worth living”, he is committed to helping people of all ages create goals that bring passion, excitement, and adventure in order to live life more abundantly!
Tom Harris is a proud husband and father as he is married to Cathy (Lincoln) for 37 years and having raised two boys and a daughter. All three are married and they presently have one grandchild.
